Reshaping Stroke Services in Northern Ireland

Health and Social Care (HSC) in partnership with stroke survivors, carers, clinicians and charities are in the early stages of reshaping stroke services in Northern Ireland.  This page provides all the latest news and developments in this process.

What is a stroke?

What stroke services are available now? Why do they need to change?

There have been lots of improvements to stroke services in Northern Ireland including:

However, many stroke survivors don’t receive the care, treatment or long-term support they should be offered.

The way stroke services are currently set up makes it difficult for stroke patients to get the best care.

With better access to treatment and services, more stroke-related deaths and disabilities could be prevented. Improved stroke services could also help lower the number of people admitted to hospital or nursing homes because of stroke.

A number of independent reports about stroke care have shown that there are lots of ways that stroke services can be improved.

Stroke care in Northern Ireland was reviewed in 2014. The review found that there isn’t a clear regional plan for stroke care.

How are we going to improve stroke services?

Stroke professionals (doctors/nurses) survivors, carers, charities and others involved in stroke care, have joined with Health and Social Care organisations and suggested seven ideas to improve care after stroke.

We asked the public what they thought about these ideas through public meetings, engagement and debate during a 13 week pre-consultation.

Information from all the discussions and the online and paper responses we received will be evaluated and will be used by the regional Reshaping Stroke Task and Finish Group to develop proposals on a new model of stroke services for Northern Ireland into the future.

These proposals will go out for formal public consultation in 2018.

Following the formal public consultation recommendations will be submitted to the Department of Health and the Minister for Health, for consideration and approval.
