Face to Face Sign Language Interpreting Service – Updated February 2021

2021-02-15

The Health and Social Care Board (HSCB) has written to our key stakeholders with an update to the information that was provided on this website in November 2020.

As outlined in November 2020, the Business Services Organisation (BSO) advertised the Face to Face Sign Language Interpreting Service Manager/ Senior Sign Language Interpreter (Band 7) post over several weeks in December 2020 – January 2021. However, no eligible applications were received and therefore the BSO was unable to appoint anyone to the role.

The HSCB is keen to understand why the recruitment exercise was unsuccessful.   As a first step in this process, the HSCB is engaging Registered Sign Language Interpreters via email with a survey, inviting them to share their perspectives and to work with us to develop the way forward, so that together we can deliver equal access and the best possible service and outcomes for people who are Deaf.  The survey will run from 5-15 February 2021*.  The HSCB and BSO will consider all of the feedback we receive before confirming any next steps.

While we are committed to keeping this process moving, it is important that we establish a firm basis on which to move forward together. With that in mind, the plans to establish a new Regional Advisory Group (noted in the November 2020 update) are currently paused, pending the outcome of our engagement with the professional sign language interpreting community.

We anticipate providing a further public update in mid-late March 2021.

*Note: the survey response deadline has been extended to 22 February 2021
