An information session for staff from the Health and Social Care Board, Public Health Agency and Business Services Organisation interested in finding out more about the encompass programme was held recently.

Around 50 staff attended the event in Portadown, led by the programme’s clinical director, Dr Michael Quinn and chair of the Digital Business Support Forum, Denise Lynd.  Other speakers included ADEPT fellow paediatrician Grace Cuddy, who discussed the day in the life of a doctor from the point of view of using lots of different systems and paperwork. The event ended with a question and answer session.

A HSC-wide programme, hosted by the Business Services Organisation, encompass aims to create a single digital health and social care record for everyone in Northern Ireland.

Currently Northern Ireland’s health and social care system uses lots of IT systems that are old and need replaced.

The encompass solution will be a single record which will replace, modernise and consolidate many of HSC’s old, fragmented and isolated systems. The new system will allow healthcare professionals to access patient information on a range of devices including handhelds such as iPads and mobile phones, wherever they are, safety and securely.

They will also be able to update records in ‘real time’, make notes electronically, prescribe medicines, order tests and communicate with patients and users.

People will be able to view their own information and communicate electronically with those who provide their care.

The awareness session is the latest in a series of engagement events across HSC , which has also included  the establishment of two staff forums  – the Digital Clinical Forums and the Digital Business Support Forum.

The Digital Care Forum brings together a range of clinicians, while the Digital Business Support Forum  includes a wide range of professionals from areas including Admin and Clerical, Planning and Contracting, System Managers, Information, Health Records, Medical Photography, Finance, HR including Staff side, Estates and Patient Services.

The encompass team is currently in the process of procuring a supplier to deliver and implement the new system. It is anticipated that the selected supplier will be announced in June, with the system going live in summer 2021, starting in the South Eastern Trust, before being rolled out to the remaining Trusts by the end of 2023.
